Drywall Calculator: How Many Sheets Do I Need?

How much drywall do I need?

Add up the walls and ceilings, add an allowance for cuts, and divide by the sheet size. The sheet count is the number that matters, because a sheet is an awkward, heavy object and the difference between fourteen and sixteen of them is a second trip.

Example: 400 sq ft of wall in 4 × 8 ft sheets400 sq ft plus 10% is 440 sq ft, which is 14 sheets. That is about 448 screws and 4 gallons of compound for the finishing.

Do not deduct small openings. A window leaves a hole in the middle of a sheet, and the offcut around it is rarely usable elsewhere — measuring the wall as solid is both simpler and closer to what you will actually buy.

Bigger sheets mean fewer joints to tape, which is the slow part of the job. They also mean a sheet that two people struggle to lift onto a ceiling. Pick the size for the room and the help you have, not just the maths.

Screws, tape and compound

Screws follow the sheet count, because fastening follows the board layout — roughly 32 per 4 × 8 sheet at 16 in centres. That is a wall figure; ceilings are fastened more tightly and take nearer 36 to 40 a sheet, so a ceiling-heavy job wants an extra box. Compound and tape follow the finished area instead, because they cover joints and faces regardless of how the sheets were cut.

The compound figure here assumes about one gallon per 100 square feet for a standard finish. A level 5 finish, a textured wall or a first attempt will all use more. Buy a bucket more than the number says.

Measure each wall as a rectangle.

Length by ceiling height. Add each wall as its own surface.

Add the ceiling separately.

Room length by room width. Ceilings often use a different sheet size to the walls.

Do not deduct doors and windows.

The offcuts around an opening are rarely usable, so a solid measurement is closer to the truth.

Common mistakes

  • Deducting every window and door, then coming up short.
  • Buying 12 ft sheets for a job you are doing alone.
  • Underestimating compound — it is the material people run out of.
  • Forgetting the ceiling entirely when measuring a room.
